Conor McGregor has confirmed he is undergoing surgery after the serious knee injury that ended his long-awaited UFC return after just over a minute.
The former two-division champion suffered a torn ACL and meniscus during his comeback fight against Max Holloway at UFC 329, forcing the contest to be stopped almost immediately.
McGregor shared an update with fans before the operation, revealing it will be the fifth surgery of his fighting career while remaining optimistic about his recovery.
The injury was a crushing setback for the Irishman, whose first appearance in the Octagon in five years ended almost as soon as it began after his knee gave way early in the opening round.
Despite the lengthy rehabilitation ahead, McGregor has already stated his intention to return to the UFC next year and complete the final fight remaining on his current contract.
UFC president Dana White has suggested the recovery could keep McGregor out of action for around a year, adding another setback to the former champion’s difficult run in recent years.
