Muhammad Mokaev insists UFC would have let him break Jon Jones’ record ‘if they wanted to’ as he slams Pantoja vs Erceg

MUHAMMAD MOKAEV has had to come to terms with the crushing realisation that one of his career dreams has gone up in smoke.

The Russian-born Brit entered the UFC in 2022 hellbent on achieving a goal he set for himself during his IMMAAF days – becoming the youngest champion in the promotion’s history.

That title was held by current heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who won the light-heavyweight strap as a fresh-faced 23-year-old thirteen years ago.

Despite suffering a horror knee injury last March, ferocious flyweight Mokaev seemed on course to break that record.

But a combination of that injury and flyweights above him in the rankings not wanting to fight him have scuppered his grand plans, which officially fell by the wayside last week.

In an exclusive interview with SunSport, ‘The Punisher’ said: “I’m not angry because it was out of my hands.

“When I came to the UFC, I said, ‘This is my dream.’ Ninety-nine per cent of people thought, ‘This guy is delusional.

“‘He’s a lunatic. Youngest UFC champion, what is he talking about?’ I was young, I was 21 when I came to the UFC.

“I believed so much in my skills and my mindset, even after my big injury.

“People were saying, ‘He’ll never be back again fighting, he should’ve tapped.’ I beat two ex-title contenders later.

“I think if the UFC wanted me to break this record, they would have done it.”

Flyweight gold will be up for grabs when MMA‘s top promotion returns to Brazil in May for defending champion Alexandre Pantoja’s second title defence against UFC rookie Steve Erceg.

Fight fans around the world were left stunned by the booking of the fight, although none of them were as perplexed as Mokaev – the owner of the longest win streak in the division.

“I was angry [when I saw the announcement],” Mokaev admitted. “I’m like, ‘Why?’ Okay if you give it to Kai Kara-France or if you give it to somebody in the top five.”

Mokaev extended his win streak earlier this month with a decision win over former title challenger Alex Perez but was far from impressed with his performance, which he believes may have contributed to Erceg’s shock title tilt.

He continued: “I would have been like, ‘Okay, my performance wasn’t great. The UFC doesn’t want to see these boring decisions.’

“But I’m on the second longest winning streak in flyweight history after Demetrious Johnson. Now, in the UFC, I have the No.1 active winning streak.

“I have more finishes than Erceg has fights in the UFC. I don’t know why they’ve done this.

“Okay, if they look at his knockout of Matt Schnell, but “I did a better finish against Cody Durden.

“Who was also in the top 15 a couple of months ago before he lost. I just don’t understand why they did this [fight].”

Mokaev has already come to terms with the disappointing realisation that he won’t be breaking Jones’ record and will have to fight one more time to earn a title shot.

His sights are set on recent title challenger Brandon Royval, whom he wants to throw down with the UK this summer.

SunSport understands the UFC brass are weighing up a return to Britain later this year, although nothing has been finalised.

Should the card come to fruition, Mokaev hopes to punch his ticket to a title fight with a dominant win over the American.

Mokaev said of the potential clash: “I said recently, ‘Give me Royval.’

“‘And if I don’t finish Royval, in the summer, I don’t want the title shot.’

“I’m gonna fight again until I finish somebody.’ In a spectacular way like the UFC wants to.

“Forget about the title now, they want a spectacular way. Give me Rovyval, I will finish him.”

Mike Tyson sends chilling warning to Jake Paul as boxing legend’s fight strategy is revealed for controversial clash

MIKE TYSON has sent a chilling warning Jake Paul’s way ahead of their shock showdown.

The boxing icon will come out of retirement in July to face the social media sensation in a controversial Texas tussle.

Fight fans worldwide have been left outraged by the booking of the bout as Paul is THIRTY YEARS Tyson’s junior.

Tyson, however, has tried to dispel fears for his safety with a series of clips of him ferociously hitting the pads.

And his most recent training video came with a warning for The Problem Child.

The former undisputed heavyweight champion wrote on his Snapchat: “Jake Paul, where you at?”

Tyson returned to the ring in November 2020 for an exhibition with fellow boxing great Roy Jones Jr.

But he looked every bit his 54 years as he shuffled around the ring in the bizarre draw.

Tyson’s head coach Rafel Cordeiro is well aware of the concerns over the legend’s return but insists they’re misplaced.

During an appearance on The MMA Hour, he said: “I believe we don’t have to be concerned about it.

“We’re talking about a two-time world champion.

“The guy didn’t have 20 fights in two years, he knows how to fight.

“He’s fought against the best guys in the world.

“When he steps inside the ring he knows what to do.

“It’s not something new for Mike, and this fight is no different.

“He works hard every single day to go in there and try to knock Jake out from the beginning to the end.

“This is his style, nobody has taught Mike Tyson how to fight. He’s going to prove that in July.

“You can see fire in his eyes when he trains, and he will never give less than that.

“I truly believe it is going to be a great show.”

‘Hard To See This Version Of Rose Going Far At 125’ – MMA Fans React As Rose Namajunas Outlasts Amanda Ribas In UFC Fight Night Headliner

Though it may not have been her most spectacular performance, Namajunas scored a win over Ribas.

After falling short in her divisional debut last September, former two-time strawweight champion Rose Namajunas got on the board at flyweight with a victory over Amanda Ribas in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night main event.

Ribas scored two takedowns during the opening round, but she was unable to do enough with them to overcome the work Namajunas put in. “Thug Rose” had the better showing with her striking and even took control on the ground after Ribas’ second takedown.

Namajunas continued to have control on the ground in the second frame, although Ribas appeared to do more damage, landing several noteworthy strikes and attempting a couple of submissions.

The significant strikes started to add up for Namajunas early in round three, as she worked over Ribas on the feet. But on the canvas, the clear edge went to the Brazilian, who troubled Namajunas with ground-and-pound.

Ribas continued to do some damage in the fourth round, but it was Namajunas who had the better positioning and technique. After a close striking battle in the fifth stanza, Namajunas got the win on the scorecards, with two judges totaling 49-46 and a third giving her a 48-47 win.

Conor McGregor claims he could fight Michael Chandler in old-school format UFC has not seen in over 10 years

CONOR McGREGOR wants to make his UFC return over three rounds – breaking a tradition over ten years old.

The Irish icon claimed he is set to make his anticipated comeback in the summer – with Michael Chandler the likely opponent.

It will be his first fight since July 2021 when he brutally broke his leg.

So with approaching three years out the cage, McGregor admitted the regular five-round main-event demand could be too much.

He said on The MMA Hour: “Rounds. Maybe I might say to them, ‘Look I’m just doing three rounds lads, for this one’.

“And I just want to just wet my beak. I can do three rounds really nicely now. Rather than pushing through to get to five.

“I feel if I push right now to get to give full fitness rounds, I feel the first three rounds wouldn’t be as sharp as I could get them.

“So I’d rather sharpen the blade of three and go in nice and sharp. Get the feel, get the fight.

“Chandler is going to come for it, Chandler’s going to try engage and come at me, he’s going to have to. That’s his style.

“I think three is a lovely one. And then the five. I do think three and five. That’s how I feel.

“This is just my own thoughts, I’ve not said this to anyone yet. It’s a go now, so I’m thinking now.”

McGregor has not been scheduled for less than five rounds since knocking out Dustin Poirier ten years ago in 2014.

And it was in 2011 that UFC president Dana White announced that all main-event bouts must be five-rounds.

But McGregor – the sport’s highest-paid and biggest superstar – insisted he would forgo his headline spot if needed.

He said: It would be interesting to see what they say about that, I could actually be first of the night. I don’t care.

“Don’t care about none of that, I really don’t care. That’s where I am at with it.”

Dana White reveals next opponent for Jake Paul: ‘If he beats Mike Tyson, he’s going to fight Clint Eastwood next’

UFC CEO Dana White loves Mike Tyson … even when he’s being a DICK.

That’s why the Las Vegas fight boss is speaking out against the upcoming boxing match between the former heavyweight champion and celebrity pugilist Jake Paul, who will collide atop a special Netflix-streamed boxing event on July 20 in Arlington, Texas.

“I love Mike and I hate talking about it because he always gets mad at me when I talk about this stuff, but when the fight happens, he’ll be 58 years old,” White told the Pound 4 Pound podcast, proving (yet again) this stunt was fake. “There will be a 31-year age difference between these two. Jake Paul did fight a kid his age [Tommy Fury] and he lost. I just saw this thing on the Internet yesterday, I reposted it where it says if he beats Mike Tyson, he’s going to fight Clint Eastwood next. Clint Eastwood’s 93 years old.”

Perhaps the MVP graphics team can use a photo of Dirty Harry for the upcoming poster.

“I dunno man. Mike’s a grown-ass man, can do whatever the f—k he wants, and I’m gonna stay outta Mike’s business,” White continued. “What Jake wants, is Jake wants to make money. The people that follow Jake Paul don’t buy Jake Paul’s fights. So Jake Paul has to fight people who can actually sell pay-per-views.”

The Paul vs. Tyson news was met with a collective groan from the combat sports community, forcing “The Problem Child” to defend himself (and the booking) on social media. Their heavyweight contest is expected to be an exhibition bout, but that hasn’t stopped opportunistic bookies from laying odds on the mid-summer showdown.

Let’s just hope Paul doesn’t “panic” after Tyson’s first punch.

Jake Paul to undergo huge body transformation for Mike Tyson fight by revealing he will look to put over ONE STONE

JAKE PAUL is preparing to put on over ONE STONE for his fight with Mike Tyson.

The YouTuber-turned boxer and heavyweight icon are to collide in a controversial clash on July 20 in Texas.

Not only will it mark Netflix’s first move into live boxing but it will also be Paul’s first fight at heavyweight.

The lightest the American, 27, has weighed is 183.6lb (13st 1lb) but his last two bouts have been at the 200lb cruiserweight limit of 14st 4lb.

Whereas Tyson was a career heavyweight at 15st 7lb, meaning Paul must pile on the pounds to match that.

During a stream with Adin Ross, he revealed his target weight for the bout will be the same 220lb mark of 15st 7lb.

That means having to put on over a stone in weight from now till the time he gets in the ring with boxing’s most feared fighter.

Tyson, 57, retired in 2005 only to return in 2020 for an exhibition bout against Roy Jones Jr, which ended in an eight-round draw.

Meanwhile Paul is 9-1 as a boxer and suffered his only defeat to Tommy Fury, 24, in February 2023 but he has won three since.

Exact rules and regulations of his mega-fight with Tyson, likes rounds and whether it will be professionally sanctioned or not are yet to be released.

But Paul’s business partner and Most Valuable Promotions co-founder Nakisa Bidarian confirmed headguards will NOT be worn.

Bidarian posted on Instagram: “Unequivocally there is no headgear for Paul vs Tyson.

“Haters spreading fake news but it won’t stop the 10’s of millions of views.”
