I went through hell being compared to my dad as a boxer, Anthony Joshua is right to ban his son from the sport

JOE BUGNER Jr and Ross Minter, the sons of famous champions, have been reliving the psychological traumas they endured when they set out on their professional careers.

They were both subjected to similar cruelties from boxing fans who took great delight in putting them down from the moment they climbed through the ropes.

As soon as they put on the gloves as amateur kids inevitably they were made aware they were going to be compared to their illustrious fathers.

Joe Bugner, Joe Jr’s Dad, was one of the biggest sports stars of the 1970s, who held the British and European heavyweight titles and fought a total of 29 rounds with Muhammad Ali and Smokin’ Joe Frazier.

Ross is the offspring of the late Alan Minter, the 1972 Munich Olympic bronze medallist who went on to become undisputed world middleweight champion.

Joe Jr and Ross were reminded of the emotional pain they suffered in their youth because of what Anthony Joshua had to say last month, a few days before he bombed out Francis Ngannou in less than six minutes.

AJ didn’t mince his words when he revealed he will never allow his eight-year-old son Joseph to be a boxer.

Joshua, talking about his boy’s future, said: “I would never let him box. You have to be so strong mentally to be a boxer. I would not want to put him through that mental pressure.

“Imagine ‘Anthony Joshua’s son is boxing’. There would be a target on his back straight away. Would I want to put him under that pressure? Probably not.”

Joe Jr and Ross know exactly where Joshua’s coming from and nobody can identify with those sentiments more than that pair.

But it was when they threw away their vests the real agonies began.

Joe Jr told me: “Good for Joshua. When I read what he had to say about his son I agree with him one hundred per cent.

COLIN HART: 50th anniversary of Joe Bugner’s first fight with Muhammad Ali, at the Las Vegas Convention Center in 1973

“There were times when I went through hell. People think when you are in the middle of a fight you can’t hear what some of the fans are yelling at you.

“In every fight I had, every move I made I was being compared with my father. It was relentless – I was simply trying to be my own man.

“I knew I was never going to be as good as my Dad but I didn’t need to have it rammed down my throat all the time.

“Perhaps if I hadn’t also been a heavyweight life would have been easier – but at 6ft 6in I was never goingto be a flyweight.”

Joe Jr, 54, had just 12 fights in six years and lost only two.

But he retired at 27 and admits the pressure of carrying his father’s name in the ring proved too much and he simply couldn’t take it any more.

One of the nastiest insults I heard thrown at him was at York Hall in East London’s Bethnal Green, when a real charmer at ringside shouted “I’d sooner watch the son of Lassie.”

Ross 45, despite winning 17 of his 22 fights and ending up English welterweight champion, certainly didn’t fair any better.

He said: “I was never allowed to forget who may father was.

“I even called myself Ross Fellows when I walked into my first amateur gym hoping nobody would realise I was Alan Minter’s son. But I couldn’t keep my real name a secret for long.

“I shall never forget after winning my first fight – a four-rounder at the old Wembley Conference Centre – as I came down the steps I heard someone remark: ‘You’ll never be as good as your old man.’

“I can tell you being put under that kind of pressure doesn’t help your confidence and I understand exactly Joshua’s fears for his lad.

“Understandably he wants to protect his son from those who seem to get great pleasure in belittling people.”

At least Chris Eubank JrConor Benn and Campbell Hatton, whose fathers were world champions, don’t seem to have been subjected to the kind of ridicule Joe Jr and Ross were put through and have had to overcome – but perhaps todays fans are less brutal than they used to be.

Boxing world champion announces MMA debut and eyes rematch with bitter rival in whole new sport

SAVANNAH MARSHALL will become the latest boxing star to make the switch to MMA when she makes her debut on June 8.

The undisputed super-middleweight world champion has signed with the Professional Fighters League.

And she will make her MMA debut in the summer on a PFL Europe card in Newcastle having penned a deal last year.

Marshall will even headline the event at the Utilita Arena with her opponent yet to be confirmed.

She told Sky Sports: “It’s exciting, it’s new, it’s something that I’m really interested in.

“Sometimes in training, I feel good and I think yeah I’m getting it now and other times I’m getting tapped like that and I think: ‘I am terrible at this.’ It’s exciting for me because it’s new.

“It’s BJJ, you’ve got kickboxing, you’ve got judo, wrestling so it’s a mix of all these different sports that I’ve never ever tried.”

Marshall, 32, last won in July beating Franchon Crews-Dezurn, 36, to win all four 168lb titles.

But she will now turn her attention to MMA, where arch rival Claressa Shields, 29, is currently 2-1 and also signed to the PFL.

Seven-division women’s champ Amanda Serrano, 35, is another boxer-turned MMA fighter signed with the PFL.

But Marshall – who was beaten by Shields in their bitter grudge bout in 2022 – is eyeing revenge in the cage.

PFL CEO Peter Murray said: “Savannah and Claressa Shields competed in one of the most-watched women’s boxing matchups in history when they first fought.

“And now with Savannah’s MMA debut, the two are on a collision course for a rematch wearing four ounce gloves and settling the score in the PFL SmartCage.”

I’ve probably knocked years off my life… but I’m proud, admits Fabio Wardley after bloodbath thriller with Frazer Clarke

FABIO WARDLEY knows his magnificent bloodbath draw with Frazer Clarke will have shaved years off of his life.

The Ipswich heavyweight was involved in one of the best British title fights of modern times.

He suffered a horrible gash to his nose and was spitting blood — before dropping 19st giant Clarke in the fifth round at London’s O2.

Both brave men took severe punishment and Clarke was deducted a point for low blows.

But Suffolk puncher Wardley, 29, retained his Lonsdale belt after scores of 114-113, 112-115 and 113-113 could not split them.

There is already demand for the rematch but Wardley — who had no amateur experience and started off as a white-collar brawler in local convention centres — is wary that 12 bloody rounds with an Olympic bronze winner shortens life expectancy.

Hiding his battered face under a baseball cap, he explained: “I am immensely proud. This was my 18th fight so I am still fresh and learning.

“But to put on a fight like that and provide the entertainment for the fans and give the belt the respect it deserves makes me immensely proud.

“My time for a fight like that was always going to come but I don’t want to be in too many more of them.

“I have probably knocked a few years off of my life with that, but it’s all in the name of good fun.

“It’s not an ideal way to box, it’s not an ideal way to fight, it definitely takes some years off your life and worries the people around you.

“So it’s not something I plan to do too often — but I went through the fire and that has value.”

Although Wardley floored Clarke with a flurry of punches, his opponent also had his moments.

Wardley’s No 1 fan at ringside definitely did not appreciate the gore-fest and she might rule out the rematch.

He added: “I was worried about my mum. Because I knew she would not enjoy watching it. My nose has seen better days. It was more of an annoyance because I had blood getting in my mouth and eyes.

“But in the middle of a firefight like that you are not going, ‘Ouch, that punch hurt’. I was just trying to crack on and get the job done.”

Ipswich Town football regular Wardley has been edging closer to a fight at Portman Road with each higher-profile win.

And another showdown with well-promoted Burton upon Trent star Clarke, 32, could fit the bill.

But Dillian Whyte-managed Wardley is a promotional and broadcast free agent, so he is not tied into a second showing and has earned the right to explore alternatives.

He explained: “The British title brings the best out of a lot of people — and it definitely did that for me and Frazer.

“We know how much that belt means to the sport and how much it means to us.

“I’ll never count a draw as a win but I still have my belts and there are a lot of options on the table.

“Whether it is the rematch or something else, we will take some time and we will reassess.”

Fans fear for UFC 300 star’s health ahead of gruelling and ‘mad’ weight cut for Dana White’S extravaganza

UFC 300 fans are fearing for the health of a big-name fighter ahead of their gruelling weight cut for the iconic card.

The eagerly-anticipated and historic pay-per-view event takes place in Las Vegas on April 13 and will be headlined by a light-heavyweight title fight between Alex Pereira and Jamahal Hill.

All 26 fighters on the card will be in the final phases of their calorie-restricted diets, which will get even more stringent on fight week when they bid to make weight.

But fan intrigue is particularly high over one UFC 300 star’s bid to make a weight limit they’ve never made before.

Former Professional Fighters League star Kayla Harrison is set to make her long-awaited octagon debut on the historic card against ex-bantamweight champ Holly Holm.

But the supremely muscle-bound Harrison has never competed at 135lbs in her MMA career, the bulk of which she’s spent at lightweight.

And although her recent social media posts have fans desperate to see her in action, several are concerned about the arduous weight cut ahead of her.

One commented: “Oh she’s definitely cutting.”

Another said: “You gotta drop mad weight 155 to 135 will be the biggest challenge.”

And another said: “Yikes, how are you gonna make 135? They should have at least made it for the 145lbs belt.”

One remarked: “I love Kayla but I’m not sure how’s she’s going to make 135lbs.”

Some fans, however, are adamant the UFC newbie looks primed to make the non-title-fight bantamweight limit of 136lbs.

Muhammad Mokaev reflects on missing on out breaking Jon Jones historic UFC record

One said: “Looking lean!!!”

Another said: “Weight looking great champ!”

And another said: “You pretty are much already on weight I bet. Just gotta pull water.”

One remarked: “Still remember so many people saying she’s gonna struggle with the weight cut.

“Stand on that with confidence now, folks.”

Another chimed in: “I believe you will make weight.”

Olympic gold medallist Harrison has no concerns about the gruelling cut down to 136lbs, telling Kevin Iole: “I wouldn’t have made the move if I didn’t think I was going to be able to do it.

“We did a test cut. Everything was measured, from my heart rate to my blood pressure to my blood sugar.

“We did a test recovery. We did a test simulated fight.

“Everything has been dialled in and everything has been tested.

“I’m really confident in my team and I’m really confident in myself.

“I’m not saying it’s going to be easy, but the things in life that are worth having are usually not easy [to obtain].”

Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul at risk of being CANCELLED if boxing legend fails unusual test written into fight rules

MIKE TYSON’S fight with Jake Paul could be cancelled if he fails an unusual test in the fight rules.

Iron Mike is set to face the YouTuber turned boxer at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on July 20.

Both fighters are pushing for the bout to be a professional contest.

However, the final decision rests with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations (TLDR).

The TLDR could also cancel the fight if Tyson fails one of their pre-fight tests.

Under their rules, fighters over the age of 38 must submit favourable electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrocardiogram (EKG) results.

Former heavyweight world champion Tyson will be 58 by the time he makes his walk in Texas in four months time.

The EEG evaluates a fighter for brain disorders, with heart problems detected by the EKG.

TDLR communications manager Tela Mange also told USA Today Sports: “We can also request additional testing if we think it’s appropriate.”

Even if Tyson passes the tests, though, the bout could still be deemed an exhibition fight.

In this case, both Tyson and Paul would wear 16-ounce gloves instead of the 10-ounce gloves usually seen in pro bouts.

The fight would additionally consist of two-minute rounds as opposed to three minutes.

There would also be no official judges to score the fight, as was the case for Tyson’s exhibition clash with Roy Jones Jr. in 2020.

Two-minute rounds were also implemented for that bout, which was Tyson’s last action inside a boxing ring.

Meanwhile, his most recent professional bout came all the way back in 2005.

Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk: New date, UK start time, TV channel, stream, PPV price, undercard for mega fight

TYSON FURY is once again set to fight Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight titles after a cut saw the original date postponed.

Fury suffered a nasty gash above his right eye in sparring earlier this month and saw his clash with Usyk on February 17 go up in smoke as a result.

Usyk revealed he missed the birth of his daughter at the beginning of the year to focus on training camp for Fury, but now he has to refocus on a new date.

Fury holds the WBC title in boxing’s glamour division, while Usyk is in possession of the WBA, WBO, IBF and Ring Magazine straps.

The pair have been on a collision course to fight for 18 months, following Usyk’s rematch win over Anthony Joshua in August 2022.

Fury only just overcame boxing debutant and former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou last October, as he was knocked down in stunning fashion before going on to win the bout on points.

And Fury’s latest scuffle in sparring with heavyweight Agron Smakici, which saw an 11-stitch cut open up below his eyebrow, will be another confidence booster for Usyk.

The Ukrainian is looking become the first man in history to win undisputed titles at both cruiserweight and heavyweight – and he’s just one win away.

A victory for Fury, on the other hand, would set up an all-British mega-bout with Anthony Joshua, who takes on Ngannou himself on March 8.

When is Fury vs Usyk?

  • Fury vs Usyk will now take place on Saturday, May 18 after the original date of February 17 was postponed.
  • The Gyspy King has three months to recover from his injury, and if there are any more pull-outs this time around, a £7.9million fee will be paid to the opposing fighter.
  • The fight will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
  • Expect main event ring-walks to get going from around 11pm BST, with the main card likely to start from 6pm BST.

What channel is it on and can it be live streamed?

  • Fury vs Usyk will be broadcast on THREE channels here in the UK.
  • You can watch the clash on TNT Sports Box Office, Sky Sports Box Office and on DAZN PPV.
  • A price for the event has yet to be confirmed.
  • You can stream the action from the TNT Sports Box Office app, Sky Sports Box Office app, or the DAZN app, all of which are available onto your mobile, tablet and Smart TV.

Fury vs Usyk full card

It has yet to be confirmed whether the original undercard will go ahead on the new date.

But this is likely to be the scheduled night of fights:

  • Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk – undisputed WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight titles
  • Joe Cordina vs Anthony Cacace – IBF super-featherweight title
  • Jai Opetaia vs Mairis Briedis – vacant IBF cruiserweight title
  • Moses Itauma vs Ilja Mezencev
  • Sergey Kovalev vs Robin Sirwan Safar
  • Bakhodir Jalolov vs TBA
  • Isaac Lowe vs Hasibullah Ahmadi
  • David Nyika vs TBA

What has been said?

“I just smiled,” Usyk said upon hearing of the postponement news.

“And said ‘OK – I will finish my training and I will do my work stretching my back’.

“Tyson. Hi, my brother. Don’t be afraid. I will not leave you alone.

“I’m still happy – things happen, it’s life,” he said.

“I’m very happy because I now go to Ukraine. I see my two daughters and my wife. I go to my church and pray. A little bit of rest and back to my camp.”

Fury said of the postponement: “I am absolutely devastated after preparing for this fight for so long and being in such superb condition.

“I feel bad for everyone involved in this huge event and I will work diligently towards the rescheduled date once the eye has healed.

“I can only apologise to everyone affected including my own team, Team Usyk, the undercard fighters, partners, and fans as well as our hosts and my friends in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

Muhammad Mokaev insists UFC would have let him break Jon Jones’ record ‘if they wanted to’ as he slams Pantoja vs Erceg

MUHAMMAD MOKAEV has had to come to terms with the crushing realisation that one of his career dreams has gone up in smoke.

The Russian-born Brit entered the UFC in 2022 hellbent on achieving a goal he set for himself during his IMMAAF days – becoming the youngest champion in the promotion’s history.

That title was held by current heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who won the light-heavyweight strap as a fresh-faced 23-year-old thirteen years ago.

Despite suffering a horror knee injury last March, ferocious flyweight Mokaev seemed on course to break that record.

But a combination of that injury and flyweights above him in the rankings not wanting to fight him have scuppered his grand plans, which officially fell by the wayside last week.

In an exclusive interview with SunSport, ‘The Punisher’ said: “I’m not angry because it was out of my hands.

“When I came to the UFC, I said, ‘This is my dream.’ Ninety-nine per cent of people thought, ‘This guy is delusional.

“‘He’s a lunatic. Youngest UFC champion, what is he talking about?’ I was young, I was 21 when I came to the UFC.

“I believed so much in my skills and my mindset, even after my big injury.

“People were saying, ‘He’ll never be back again fighting, he should’ve tapped.’ I beat two ex-title contenders later.

“I think if the UFC wanted me to break this record, they would have done it.”

Flyweight gold will be up for grabs when MMA‘s top promotion returns to Brazil in May for defending champion Alexandre Pantoja’s second title defence against UFC rookie Steve Erceg.

Fight fans around the world were left stunned by the booking of the fight, although none of them were as perplexed as Mokaev – the owner of the longest win streak in the division.

“I was angry [when I saw the announcement],” Mokaev admitted. “I’m like, ‘Why?’ Okay if you give it to Kai Kara-France or if you give it to somebody in the top five.”

Mokaev extended his win streak earlier this month with a decision win over former title challenger Alex Perez but was far from impressed with his performance, which he believes may have contributed to Erceg’s shock title tilt.

He continued: “I would have been like, ‘Okay, my performance wasn’t great. The UFC doesn’t want to see these boring decisions.’

“But I’m on the second longest winning streak in flyweight history after Demetrious Johnson. Now, in the UFC, I have the No.1 active winning streak.

“I have more finishes than Erceg has fights in the UFC. I don’t know why they’ve done this.

“Okay, if they look at his knockout of Matt Schnell, but “I did a better finish against Cody Durden.

“Who was also in the top 15 a couple of months ago before he lost. I just don’t understand why they did this [fight].”

Mokaev has already come to terms with the disappointing realisation that he won’t be breaking Jones’ record and will have to fight one more time to earn a title shot.

His sights are set on recent title challenger Brandon Royval, whom he wants to throw down with the UK this summer.

SunSport understands the UFC brass are weighing up a return to Britain later this year, although nothing has been finalised.

Should the card come to fruition, Mokaev hopes to punch his ticket to a title fight with a dominant win over the American.

Mokaev said of the potential clash: “I said recently, ‘Give me Royval.’

“‘And if I don’t finish Royval, in the summer, I don’t want the title shot.’

“I’m gonna fight again until I finish somebody.’ In a spectacular way like the UFC wants to.

“Forget about the title now, they want a spectacular way. Give me Rovyval, I will finish him.”

Mike Tyson sends chilling warning to Jake Paul as boxing legend’s fight strategy is revealed for controversial clash

MIKE TYSON has sent a chilling warning Jake Paul’s way ahead of their shock showdown.

Fight fans worldwide have been left outraged by the booking of the bout as Paul is THIRTY YEARS Tyson’s junior.

Tyson, however, has tried to dispel fears for his safety with a series of clips of him ferociously hitting the pads.

And his most recent training video came with a warning for The Problem Child.

The former undisputed heavyweight champion wrote on his Snapchat: “Jake Paul, where you at?”

Tyson returned to the ring in November 2020 for an exhibition with fellow boxing great Roy Jones Jr.

But he looked every bit his 54 years as he shuffled around the ring in the bizarre draw.

Tyson’s head coach Rafel Cordeiro is well aware of the concerns over the legend’s return but insists they’re misplaced.

During an appearance on The MMA Hour, he said: “I believe we don’t have to be concerned about it.

“We’re talking about a two-time world champion.

“The guy didn’t have 20 fights in two years, he knows how to fight.

“He’s fought against the best guys in the world.

“When he steps inside the ring he knows what to do.

“It’s not something new for Mike, and this fight is no different.

“He works hard every single day to go in there and try to knock Jake out from the beginning to the end.

“This is his style, nobody has taught Mike Tyson how to fight. He’s going to prove that in July.

“You can see fire in his eyes when he trains, and he will never give less than that.

“I truly believe it is going to be a great show.”

‘Hard To See This Version Of Rose Going Far At 125’ – MMA Fans React As Rose Namajunas Outlasts Amanda Ribas In UFC Fight Night Headliner

Though it may not have been her most spectacular performance, Namajunas scored a win over Ribas.

After falling short in her divisional debut last September, former two-time strawweight champion Rose Namajunas got on the board at flyweight with a victory over Amanda Ribas in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night main event.

Ribas scored two takedowns during the opening round, but she was unable to do enough with them to overcome the work Namajunas put in. “Thug Rose” had the better showing with her striking and even took control on the ground after Ribas’ second takedown.

Namajunas continued to have control on the ground in the second frame, although Ribas appeared to do more damage, landing several noteworthy strikes and attempting a couple of submissions.

The significant strikes started to add up for Namajunas early in round three, as she worked over Ribas on the feet. But on the canvas, the clear edge went to the Brazilian, who troubled Namajunas with ground-and-pound.

Ribas continued to do some damage in the fourth round, but it was Namajunas who had the better positioning and technique. After a close striking battle in the fifth stanza, Namajunas got the win on the scorecards, with two judges totaling 49-46 and a third giving her a 48-47 win.

Conor McGregor claims he could fight Michael Chandler in old-school format UFC has not seen in over 10 years

CONOR McGREGOR wants to make his UFC return over three rounds – breaking a tradition over ten years old.

The Irish icon claimed he is set to make his anticipated comeback in the summer – with Michael Chandler the likely opponent.

It will be his first fight since July 2021 when he brutally broke his leg.

So with approaching three years out the cage, McGregor admitted the regular five-round main-event demand could be too much.

He said on The MMA Hour: “Rounds. Maybe I might say to them, ‘Look I’m just doing three rounds lads, for this one’.

“And I just want to just wet my beak. I can do three rounds really nicely now. Rather than pushing through to get to five.

“I feel if I push right now to get to give full fitness rounds, I feel the first three rounds wouldn’t be as sharp as I could get them.

“So I’d rather sharpen the blade of three and go in nice and sharp. Get the feel, get the fight.

“Chandler is going to come for it, Chandler’s going to try engage and come at me, he’s going to have to. That’s his style.

“I think three is a lovely one. And then the five. I do think three and five. That’s how I feel.

“This is just my own thoughts, I’ve not said this to anyone yet. It’s a go now, so I’m thinking now.”

McGregor has not been scheduled for less than five rounds since knocking out Dustin Poirier ten years ago in 2014.

And it was in 2011 that UFC president Dana White announced that all main-event bouts must be five-rounds.

But McGregor – the sport’s highest-paid and biggest superstar – insisted he would forgo his headline spot if needed.

He said: It would be interesting to see what they say about that, I could actually be first of the night. I don’t care.

“Don’t care about none of that, I really don’t care. That’s where I am at with it.”
