Floyd Mayweather’s planned exhibition bout with kickboxing legend Mike Zambidis has been cancelled just 48 hours before the pair were due to meet in Athens.
The event, which was expected to attract thousands of fans to Greece, has been scrapped following an ongoing legal battle involving the former five-weight world champion.
The dispute centres around claims from CSI Sports Events, which alleges Mayweather violated an exclusive agreement after accepting another exhibition bout. The company says it previously paid the American $4.65 million (£3.53 million) as part of a deal covering future fights against Mike Tyson and Manny Pacquiao.
With legal proceedings still unresolved, organisers were unable to move forward with the event.
Court documents cited by ESPN state that the lawsuit and accompanying legal action effectively halted promotion of the show, disrupted broadcasting plans and brought ticket sales to a standstill, making it impossible for the event to proceed as scheduled.
While the fight has been cancelled for now, the possibility of staging it at a later date remains open if the legal issues are resolved.
The cancellation also affects every athlete on the card, with 17 scheduled contests across boxing, kickboxing, MMA, Muay Thai and freestyle wrestling all being called off at the last minute.
For now, fans hoping to see Mayweather return to the ring will have to wait until the legal dispute reaches a conclusion.
