Chris Eubank Sr has issued a dramatic warning to his son, Chris Eubank Jr, in an attempt to stop him from taking a rematch against Conor Benn — by threatening to return to the ring himself at the age of 58.
Eubank Jr, 35, is reportedly eyeing a rematch with Benn on September 27, following their intense showdown at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last month. Although he emerged victorious via decision, the bout left Eubank Jr hospitalized with severe dehydration — raising concerns from his father about the toll the sport continues to take on him.
The elder Eubank, a former world champion at middleweight and super-middleweight, believes his son has nothing left to prove. On his Call Chris Eubank podcast, he said that Eubank Jr’s performance against Benn was the pinnacle of his career and insisted there’s no need for him to step back into the ring. He warned that if his son chooses to fight again, he too will return in an exhibition match — not to relive past glories, but to make a statement.
Eubank Sr explained that he’s prepared to put pressure on his son, saying that if Junior insists on continuing, then he’ll do the same — because they are in this together. He’s convinced that the rematch serves no purpose and believes his son should “sail off into the sunset” while he still has his health.
Although the elder Eubank has long resisted the temptation to come out of retirement, unlike fellow boxing greats such as Mike Tyson or Evander Holyfield, he made it clear that nothing — not even fame or fortune — could convince him to fight again under normal circumstances. He said he’s already achieved what he set out to do in the sport, describing himself as someone who “hit the bullseye” and now values peace of mind over legacy or money.
He also dismissed any notion of chasing one last payday, saying that not even “all the gold in Buckingham Palace” could lure him back into the ring under regular circumstances — unless, of course, it’s to stop his son from risking more than he needs to.
The potential Eubank Jr vs Benn rematch is one of the most talked-about stories in British boxing, but with Eubank Sr inserting himself into the narrative, the emotional stakes may now be just as high as the physical ones.
