Rising heavyweight star Moses Itauma delivered another explosive performance on Saturday night in Glasgow, knocking out American Mike Balogun in the second round and extending his unbeaten record to 12-0 (10 KOs).
The 20-year-old Chatham powerhouse dropped Balogun three times in a dominant display, prompting fans and pundits alike to call for a significant step up in competition — with Martin Bakole frequently mentioned as the ideal next opponent.
However, promoter Frank Warren has shut down the idea of Itauma facing Bakole any time soon. Speaking to Queensberry Promotions, Warren said: “No! Bakole’s got to be able to get himself in shape, the state of him, not happening.”
Bakole, who suffered a quick defeat to Joseph Parker in February, was ringside during Itauma’s victory and offered praise — along with a warning.
“Moses has got a beautiful career before him. But right now, it’s too early for him to face me,” said the Congolese-born fighter. “He’d be making a big mistake. He’s playing with fire.”
Despite the setback in matchmaking, Itauma remains focused and eager. Reflecting on his latest win, he said: “I appreciate Mike Balogun — he’s one tough cookie. I couldn’t believe he got up from the second knockdown. No one else wanted to take the fight, so I respect him.”
He added: “I don’t have to worry about doing rounds, but my team wants to see me in a 10-rounder. And then I want in with the big dogs.”
With his star rapidly rising, fans will be watching closely to see who steps up to face Britain’s hottest young heavyweight next.
