Boxing Results: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez Defeats John Ryder!

By Ken Hissner: At the Estadio Akron, Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, Saturday over DAZN PPV promoters Saul Alvarez (Canelo Promotions), Eddie Hearn (Matchroom Boxing) and Eddy Reynoso (Clase y Talento) presented in the Main Event WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF World Super Middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez defeated WBO Interim champion John ‘The Gorilla’ Ryder scoring one knockdown over 12 rounds.

In the Main Event WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF World Super Middle champ Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, 59-2-2 (39), #167.5, of Guadalajara, Jalisco, MEX, WBO Interim champ John ‘The Gorilla’ Ryder, 32-6 (18), #168, of Islington, London, UK, 12 rounds.

In the tenth round Ryder came back well enough to take the round. In the eleventh and twelfth rounds Ryder made enough of a fight to get to the end.

Scores were 120-107 and 118-109 twice.

WBC World Fly champ Julio Cesar “El Rey” Martinez, 20-2 (15), #112, of Mexico City, MEX, stopped Ronal Batista, 15-3 (9), #112, of Panama City, PAN, at 1:00 in the eleventh round of a scheduled 12 rounds.

In the first round Martinez landed a right uppercut making Batista stumble. Batista landed a left hook at the bell. In the second round Martinez landed a good left hook but Batista fired with a right hand. Batista continued going to the body. Both were landing punches after the bell. In the third round Martinez continued to get in jabs and a few power punches. Batista is also landing plenty of punches.

In the fourth round Martinez landed a hard uppercut that backed Batista back but he came right back. Batista was deducted a point for again hitting after the bell by Referee Celestino Ruiz. In the eleventh round Martinez trapped Batista against a ropes while the latter was not fighting back forcing the referee to step in and call a halt.

Super Welter Gabriel Gollaz, 27-3-1 (16), #139, of Guadalajara, Jalisco, MEX, won questionable split decision over WBA Inter-Continental Super Light champ Steve “The Viking” Spark, 16-3 (14), #140, of Toowoomba, Queensland, AUST, 10 rounds.

In the third round Spark landed three left hooks before landing a right that had Gollaz stumbling backwards. Spark ended the round with few more left hooks. In the sixth round Gollaz landed a flurry causing Spark’s knee to hit the canvas for an 8-count. At the end of the round again a flurry from Gollaz had Spark reeling. In the tenth round Gollaz landed a right but was hit by a left hook and right to the body by Spark. Referee Celestino Ruiz

Light Heavy Oleksandr “The Nail” Gvozdyk, 19-1 (15), #174.8, of Kharkiv, UKR, and Oxnard, CA, Ricards “The Lion” Bolotniks, 19-7-1 (8), #174.8, of Riga, Lativa, at 1:56 of the sixth round of a scheduled 10 rounds.

In the first five rounds Gvozdyk started slow with little to pick. In the sixth round after a slow start Gvozdyk ran over Boltniks opening a gash over the left eyebrow causing referee Celestino Ruiz to wave it off.

WBC Fecarbox Feather champ Nathan Devon Rodriguez, 11-0 (7), #126, of Pico Rivera, CA, won a majority decision over Alexander “Popeye” Mejia, 19-6 (8), #126, of Managua, NIC, over 10 rounds.
